Tel Aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Naphtali Bennett rejected the reopening of the US main diplomatic mission promised for Palestine in Jerusalem, saying there was no room in the city contested for the office.
Trump’s administration closed the US Jerusalem consulate, an office that had been served for many years of the De Facto embassy to Palestine.
The State Secretary Antony Blinken has promised to reopen, an Israeli step will challenge its sovereignty in the city.
Re-opening can help improve relations with Palestine which breaks under Trump.
Asked about the consulate at a press conference, Bennett at the end of Saturday repeated the position of Israel in Jerusalem.
“There is no room for other American consulates in Jerusalem,” he said.
“Jerusalem is the capital of one country and that is the state of Israel.” Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid suggested the consulate instead can be opened at the Palestinian administration center in Ramallah, West Bank.
Palestinians will reject the idea because they will damage their claims to Jerusalem.
Israel looked at Jerusalem as his eternal capital and was not divided.
Palestinians look for the eastern part of the city, occupied by Israel in 1967 and then annexed, as the expected capital – for the country.
This consulate emerged as another test between the Bennett and Biden administration government, which had moved to restore foreign policy A.S.
Traditional against Israel and Palestine after the White House Trump mostly sided with Israel related to conflict.
Trump has lowered the consulate operation and placed them under his dubsador to Israel when he moved the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to the Holy City in 2018.
The Embassy Movers thrilled the Palestinians and made them the most with Trump administration.
Blinken has not provided a strong date for reopening and officials A.S.
Impatulating that Israeli resistance to the move can act as a barrier.
Palestinian officials Wassel Abu Yussef said the rejection of Bennett rooted Israel’s “occupation policy” and it presents a challenge to the Biden government to follow up on his promise.
