ROME: A Rome judge Tuesday ordered four high-profile associates of Egypt’s security forces to stand trial for the abduction, torture and killing at Cairo of a Italian doctoral student. Judge Pierluigi Balestrieri place Oct. 14 as the date for the launching of this trial, and the LaPresse news bureau reported following a closed-door preliminary hearing. It’s widely anticipated that the suspects will be tried in absentia. Back in December, Italian prosecutors officially placed the four Egyptians under evaluation for their alleged roles at the 2016 slaying of Giulio Regeni. He had been in Cairo to investigate union actions among street vendors as part of the doctoral thesis.
