Salem: S Karmegam District Coller on Thursday allowed a heavy vehicle to use Salem-Yercaud Ghat Roads, which was closed for them after heavy rains triggered landslides along the route, at 30kmph.
The heavy vehicle operator said the district government had forbidden them from using Jalan Ghat through Gorimedu and Kuppanur to prevent accidents after landslides.
The move had hit the population of Yercaud and around it, as an important commodity movement to the city of Hill was affected.
Many of them were forced to travel to Salem to buy important items.
When the collector knew about the difficulties faced by the local population, he had held a meeting with the officials of the Highways department on Wednesday to explore the choice of heavy vehicles using the Ghats road.
“We then make a decision to allow heavy vehicles to use the two paths of Ghat by limiting speeds of up to 30kmph and do not burden them.
We have warned them not to overtake other vehicles on stretching and go close to the edge of the road,” said the collector.
