Mangaluru: The Department of Fisheries has planned to develop a floating dock for the convenience of deep sea fishing boats on Mangaluru Beach.
The government has approved the proposal for Rs 6.5 Crore to establish the first floating dock on the coast of Karnataka, said South Mangaluru City MLA D Vedayas Kamates.
He spoke at the launch of eight isolated cold storage trucks from Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) here on Monday.
The proposed floating jetty will appear near the old port where the work in the third phase of the fisheries port is taking place.
The State Cabinet has approved Hospital 22 Crore for completion of the third phase of fisheries.
Meanwhile, the pier to dock traditional fishermen boats will be built in Thota Bengre with an estimated cost of 3.5 crore.
The proposal to improve the old port by providing all basic facilities at the estimated cost of almost Rs 100 Crore has been sent to the central government after being approved by the state government.
Overall, the government has proposed 16 development projects in the fisheries sector spending almost 1,100 crore rs in coastal districts of the country, MLA said.
In its inaugural address, Minister of Fisheries, Portland Port and Transportation S Angara said the government had plans to promote fishing inland with marine fisheries.
Reminiscent of the dangerous effects of excessive fishing in marine ecology, ministers say fishermen have the responsibility to protect fish species as well.
He added that the Department of Fisheries will establish a cold storage unit in various places to ensure supply of fresh fish.
He suggested that Arecanut farmers, who suffer losses due to yellow leaf diseases in plantations, can consider pisciculture as an ideal alternative.
Chairperson of KFDC Nith Kumar said the insulated cold storage vehicle was obtained by the estimated cost of Rs 2 Crore under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).
The corporation has bought three trucks with a capacity of four tons, four with a capacity of two tons and other tons of vehicles.
