Washington: First Lady Jill Biden will attend the opening ceremony of the summer Olympics in Tokyo, the White House announced Tuesday, even when the city had entered a new emergency above the Coronavirus case.
Biden will attend the opening ceremony on July 23 without President Joe Biden.
The last time he attended the match in 2010, when he and her husband led the US delegation to the winter match in Vancouver, Canada.
This year’s match will be held without fans in the stands, after an emergency is stated in Tokyo.
The Secretary of the White House Press Jen PSaki told reporters before that a team was sent to Tokyo to assess the feasibility of Jill Biden’s visit.
Last week, he said that even though there was an increase in the case of Coronavirus, the President still supports US athletes traveling there for the competition.
“We are well aware of careful preparation, including public health steps needed to protect athletes, staff and spectators, that the government and the international committee have done, which is why, as we say, we support the game that moves forward,” said PSAKI.
