Former West Virginia Health Commissioner, Dr.
Rahul Gupta was nominated on Tuesday as the next director of the National Narcotics Control Policy Office.
Atul Gawande, a popular surgeon and author, was nominated for the Bureau Assistant Administrator for global health at the US Agency for international development.
A primary care doctor who practiced 25 years, Gupta previously served under two governors as West Virginia Health Commissioner.
As the main state health worker, he led the efforts of the opioid crisis response and launched a number of pioneering public health initiatives, including the birth program of neonatal abstinene syndrome to identify high-risk infants.
Gupta also led the development of the Zika State Action Plan and its readiness efforts during the Ebola virus outbreak.
The leaders of national and global thinking and innovative public policy drivers of health problems, Gupta functions as an advisor for several organizations and task force with local, national and international public health policies.
The son of an Indian diplomat, Rahul was born in India and grew on the outskirts of Washington, DC.
At the age of 21, he finished medical school at Delhi University.
