Joe Biden urges ceasefire at Ethiopia’s Tigray Area

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has called for a ceasefire at Ethiopia’s conflict-ridden Tigray area in light of the escalating violence .

“Political wounds cannot be treated via force of arms,” dpa news agency supplied Biden as saying on Wednesday evening.

He explained belligerents from the Tigray area should announce and stick into a ceasefire, also Eritrean and Amhara forces must draw.

“I’m profoundly worried by the gore as well as the hardening of ethnic and regional divisions in many sections of Ethiopia.
The large scale human rights abuses occurring at Tigray, including widespread sexual abuse, are both unacceptable and has to end.

“lands of each history and cultural heritage deserve to live in peace and safety in their own country,” the President stated.

The US administration’s special envoy to the Horn of Africa,” Jeff Feltman, will go to the area again a week to find a peaceful settlement of these conflicts,” Biden stated.

The government launched a military offensive in November 2020 from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in northern Ethiopia, which till then had electricity at the Tigray region.

The hostilities in northern Ethiopia soon escalated into a intricate battle between neighbouring Eritrea.

Ethiopia had denied that Eritrean troops had been present from the conflict-ridden area, but subsequently announced in early April they might be removed.

Ethiopia’s army offensive followed the years of stress between the TPLF and the central authorities, in a battle that has driven tens of thousands of individuals to flee their houses and caused widespread devastation.
