Mumbai: One of the most dense traffic junctions of Juhu, BP Patel Chowk, who has five roads that combine it, arranged to redesign to make it pedestrian friendly.
Just like what was done at Jagnade Chowk, Lalbaug, recently, the Refuge Islands would be made in Patel Chowk for pedestrians to stop and cross.
“This project has been planned for a long time.
Pandemic stopped it.
We want to immediately start working,” said the local corporator Renu Hansraj.
Local residents say congestion at the intersection worsened for years.
It’s not safe that people who usually walk short to the beach are now removing their car.
“The intersection leads to the coast and people from all cities meet on it.
It’s time the intersection is reorganized,” said Mohanbhai Patel, former Mumbai Sheriff and the local residents.
Saurabh Jain, a consultant with WRI India who helped with the design of the intersection, said the site of the prospective island traffic is currently inaccessible and visual barrier.
“The proposal sees makes it accessible for pedestrians, to provide protection, design it for human scales and also to increase visibility,” he said, adding that beauty would be a by-product of the focus on salvation.
