Melbourne: Kaia Kania Canapi strengthened from a set to the bottom to the world number two Aryna Sabalenka 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (10) at the Margaret Court Arena in a strict contest on Monday to reach the Australian quarter-finals open for first time.
After giving up on the opening set for three consecutive matches, Sabalenka led a set for the first time in Melbourne but could not build it because the problem of his presentation reappeared.
The talented kanepi was a double break at the beginning of the second set with a back-to-back double error of his 23-year-old opponent and did not waste the opportunity when he drove to 4-0 before taking the set.
The 36-year-old child took the momentum into the decider and saw the set to rise 5-3 but the Sabalenka saved four break points to accommodate for 3-4 and its level, before suffering from the service crisis again and hit three double errors in four.
Points.
The Kanepi was made to work for his victory after not being able to close the match from 40-0 as sabalenka saved four matches, but Estonia won in Tiebreak and changed his fifth position to resolve irritably.
Kanepi will take the seventh seed Poland Iga Swigek, who defeated Sorana Cirstea 5-7 6-3 6-3 earlier on Monday, for a place in the last four.
