Karnataka: Farmers burn themselves during protests in the case

BELOGIVAVI: A farmer tries to commit suicide by setting up hisself burning during protests against land acquisition for bypass on the outskirts of Mache Village in Bataghiavi on Thursday.
Farmers identified as Akash Anagolkar poured gasoline and burned himself.
He suffered burns and is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The incident occurred after the official National Highway Authority (NHAI) arrived at the place for inspection ahead of the construction of the Mache bypass.
The farmers were nervous on sites against land acquisition for the project.
When the protest increased, city police began to bring demonstrators into preventive detention and things that came out of control with the protesters running the slogans against the police.
A witness on the site said that the police used a mild lathicharge to bring a crowd under control.
This is when Anagolakar appears with a bottle of gasoline and starts pouring it on himself.
While some people thought he was just pretending, in a short time he turned on the match and burned himself.
Police Commissioner Beleagavi K Thiyagarajan said the police did not attack farmers.
