Karnataka: How Government School Teachers do online classes for tribal children

Mysuru: Teachers at eight government schools in Gundlupet, Chamarajanagar Regency, have volunteered to launch online classes for children from poor families and tribal communities.
When school does not have a smart classroom or full video conference facility, the teacher stands in front of the board and turns on available applications like Google meet on their cellphones.
Nirmala R, who taught Kannada and Science in higher elementary schools in Dodahundi, has held classes this way since the first week of July.
“I help students download the Google application on their parents’ cellphones.
I do class between 11:00 and 13:00 because this is a convenient time slot for students,” he said.
“Most of my students come from poor families involved in agriculture.
Parents return from the field at 11 o’clock in the morning and give their cellphones to children.
The session became quite popular.” Nagendra cs, a teacher in the government elementary school Higher in Gopalapura, and Naveen Kumar PM, from the Devarahalli government school, also began to do this month’s class.
“The main challenge is that students do not have upscale computers or telephones in their homes.
We use whatsapp to send worksheets and conduct evaluations.
We keep in touch with all students by telephone and make them stay motivated about learning,” said Nagendra.
Naveen, who taught English, said that online classes are new experiences for many students.
“Participation has been encouraging.
They answered questions that we asked during the session and interact,” he said.
The Gundlupet Block Education Officer SC Shivamurthy, which supports teachers in their efforts, said that students adapt to alternative forms of learning, including chandana channels.
