A man who won the recent election to Bellagavi City Corporation (BCC) cut the celebration to cremate the body of the orphans and emerge as a role model for many politicians.
In the last five years, Shankar Patil, 32, has cremated 500-600 orphaned bodies and not claimed in and around the city.
At the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, he did the last rite of more than 200 deceased.
He along with his friends has provided free cremation services to the poor, especially orphans.
As soon as he received a call that said that the body of an orphan was found near the Kakti, he and his friend left where they celebrated the victory of Patil’s election.
They brought the body in the ambulance to the Sadashivanagar crematorium and performed the last ritual.
Previously, Patil was used to drive the autorickshaw to support his family.
Then, with the help of a friend, he joined the pharmaceutical company as a medical representative.
However, he always wants to provide social services.
About five years ago, he came up with the idea of cremating an underprivileged body.
Patil told Tii, “We have cremated 500-600 bodies.
At present, the cremation costs Rs 500 -1,000 and there are many who cannot afford it.
In addition, orphans do not have anyone to do their last ritual.
I am recognized in the environment I am because of this work.
How can I do service just because I won the election? “Patil has two ambulances dedicated to transporting an unclaimed body.
