Mysuru: To make it easier for the burden on the Dubare Elephant Camp, which is currently taking care of 32 groups, the State Forestry Department has approved preparing a new satellite camp near Harangi Dam in Kodagu.
Approval to the 3rd Elephant camp and 3rd district came after senior officials from Bengaluru visited the 40 hectare project site near the Forest Attor Reserve and examined the area.
The Ministry of Forestry plans to move 15 elephants to this camp after working complete.
This district has another elephant camp in Mathigodu.
“The proposed project site is suitable for new elephant camps because it is adjacent to the Dam Harangi.
Construction work has not yet begun.
We need at least six months to develop the initial infrastructure facilities and elephants can be transferred after the first phase is complete,” said the Kushalanagar forest officer Ananyakumar.
The decision to establish a new camp was taken after the expert committee formed by the Karnataka High Court visited the Dubare camp and suggested that only 15 elephants had to be stored in the camp.
According to the authorities, the work worth RS 70 Lakh will be taken in the first phase and funds from the management of funds for compensation and planning authorities will be used for this project.
Houses for Mahout and Kavadis, Medical Dispensers and other basic infrastructure facilities will be built under the phase I plan.
