Bengaluru: With schools allowed a 100% presence for classes on campus for grade 6 to 12 from Friday, the request to continue the portion of midday eating in the government and the state-assisted school has become intense.
The government stopped serving midday food in March 2020 after school was ordered to be closed as a precautionary measure of Covid-19 pandemic.
Instead of eating hot, the government began providing food grains and pulses to students to redeem food loss.
However, the supply is uncertain.
Now, because all the activities return to normal and pandemic seems to receive, parents demand that the government continue the portion at school.
However, BC Nagesh, the Minister of Premier and Medium Education, said the decision would only be taken when schools reopened for grade 1 to 5 as well.
“The department is aware of the demand for continuing midday food at school,” he said when contacted on Friday.
With income affected by a pandemic because of the pandemic and the price of food granules through the roof, the elderly from the economically weaker part hopes the scheme will reduce their financial burden – at least a little.
“This is the right time for the government to begin serving food at school.
The government must at least continue the scheme when schools reopened after the Dasara holiday,” Basavaraj, a daily wage worker from Kalaburagi District.
S Suresh Kumar, former Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, met with Minister of Main Basavaraj Bommai on Friday to urge him to continue the scheme.
“This will help Lakh students from the economically weaker part.
CM has positively responded to my request,” Kumar said.
The Karnataka State Commission for the protection of children’s rights also encourages the commencement of the scheme.
In July, the government decided to provide the cost of cooking midday food to students through direct benefit transfers.
The DPI Commissioner has even released a round to facilitate students to open a bank account or post office, but the scheme failed to take off.
