Kerala: College to train students with disabilities in Horticulture

Thiruvananthapuram: As part of Kerala’s Social Security Mission, Vellayani Agricultural College launched a six-month training course in behavioral science with horticulture for students with disabilities.
The course will begin before November 14.
Higher Education will recognize 30 students who qualified above 18 years.
They must have a medical certificate that proves their disability.
The classes will be from 10am to 3pm.
This program includes practical and theoretical topics.
Theoretical syllabus includes ways to plant and protect plants.
Yoga, exercise, watering factory, trees, and indoor activities such as craft and flower settings are part of a practical curriculum.
One hour will be set aside every day for students to grow plants that have been given to them.
“We have received applications from various categories of disabled people.
This course will help students in improving their living standards.
This will have a therapeutic effect on them.
We will not force one of the students to participate in outdoor activities.
Instead, we will provide Extra indoor activities for those who are not ready to touch the ground, “said Bela GK, the Course Coordinator.
“Student limitations can be a challenge; for example, visual disabled people cannot easily take care of plants.
Likewise, students with intellectual disabilities cannot understand the information about plants and how to care for them.
However, we have experienced faculty to deal with them,” said Beela.
Activities can also have therapeutic influences on everyone’s mental and physical health.
They will learn how to develop vegetables and fruit gardens, as well as save and plant seeds and puppies.
They will also study plant regulation and craft based crafts.
They will be involved in therapeutic activities such as meditation, hugging trees and watering plants.
This course can be adjusted for each individual.
