Kerala: Nodal Officer gets more than 1,300 complaints from women in 20 days

Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 1,333 complaints have been received in 20 days by R Nishanthini, SP, Pathanamthitta, and State Nodal Officers appointed to exclusively deal with harassment and problems related to dowry, from women throughout the state.
The majority of complaints have been received from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha.
Of the 1,333 complaints received from June 24 to July 13 this year, 187 related to dowry cases and they were taken based on priority.
“At least a tenth of this case is related to the problem of dowry.
We are looking for this complaint based on priorities and assigning them to a female police company from the district concerned for the necessary follow-up actions.
In the district without a female police station, this is being handled by district women’s cells , “Nishanthini said.
Complaints are categorized into three – related to dowry, regarding family disputes and those related to violence due to alcohol consumption.
“We hold periodic reviews about complaints and ensure that all complainants are contacted from their respective districts within 24 hours of registering complaints,” Nishanthini said.
Their statement is being recorded and further action is being taken in coordination with other government organizations established under the Women’s and Child Development Department, Kudumbashree, etc.
Those who seeking counseling directed to the center of the domestic conflict resolution, those who seek shelter are directed to the center of one roof (under the Department of Women and Children’s Development) or Snehitha (under Kudumbashree) and those who need legal assistance to be directed to the District Law Service Authority.
The government has appointed R Nishanthini as a state nodal officer for investigating all complaints related to dowry.
After the death of a young woman in Kollam allegedly due to the main problems, the minister of Pinarayi Vijayan’s chairman has announced that from June 24, all of these complaints will be examined by nodal officers exclusively appointed to the task, and assisted by a sub-inspector woman.

Previously, according to the data of the Kerala state female commission, 1,096 cases of abuse related to Mahar have been registered with the Commission since 2010, where most cases come from the Thiruvananthapuram district and Kollam.
Data shows that seven southern districts – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam – contributed 80% of the total cases registered by the Commission (866 of 1,096 cases).
