Thiruvananthapuram: In the last 120 years, October has received heavy rainfall – as it was done this year – on three other occasions, the weather department had said and added that the rain fell in 2021 was the highest since then.
According to data released by the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD), Kerala received 589.9 mm rainfall in October this year, the highest since 1901 and more than doubled from this country during this month.
Heavy rainfall in October this year was caused by the remnants of the southwest rainy season which is common until October 25, after that the northeastern rainy season began, pti, told PTI.
He also said that in June-July this year, state rainfall received as part of lack of monsoon and quantity became normal only after excess precipitation in August-September.
Before 2021, the state received rainfall of more than 500 mm in October 1932 (543.2 mm), 1999 (567.9 mm) and 2002 (511.7 mm), the IMD had said.
The lowest rainfall of the country received during this month in the last 120 years was in 1989 when it received less than 100 mm, according to IMD data.
Most countries have received between 200 mm rainfall to 400 mm during this month in the last 12 decades, the IMD data has said.
