Thiruvananthapuram: live birth in Kerala recorded the highest decline in a decade by 2021, showing the figures of the civil registration given by the local government department.
The number of live births was dipped by 71,000 between 2020 and 2021 and for the first time in the past decade, the birth of Life Kerala went under 4 lakh.
Ernakulam is an exception alone among the district.
While live births declined 1,000 to 16,000 in other districts, in Ernakulam increased from 26,190 in 2020 to 27,751 in 2021.
The sharpest decline was proven in Malappuram, Kannur and Kozhikode which recorded a decline of 18%, 22% and 26%.
The district such as Trivandrum, Kollam and Thrissur recorded a decline of 5,000 to 6,000.
For the past 10 years in Kerala, the level of life birth has shown marginal variations between years.
Officials with registration of vital events said that pending registration cannot be taken into account to soak in live births in the state.
“In Kerala, the kiosk-based registration system for institutional delivery ensures one of the highest percentages of birth registration in India and it is also within a period of time specified 21 days.
Registration is late; if at all, only an account for a nominal percentage and even reflected in System, “said Head of the Birth Registrar and Thresymma Death Antony.
Officials with reproductive children’s health at the National Health Mission and the obstetrician said Covid was the main factor in reducing the number of births.
