Thiruvananthapuram: The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has ordered a probe to ensure the reason that caused the death of Transgender activist Ananhanah Kumari Alex who was suspected of undergoing unsuccessful sex assignment surgery (SRS).
Health Minister Veena George, on Wednesday, directed the Director of the Health Office to launch the probe directly in this case.
The organization that works for the protection of transgender rights has also submitted a petition to the minister.
“The Expert Committee will be formed to study the problems associated with SRS,” said the Minister’s Office.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Social Welfare R Bindin ordered an inquiry of department into various aspects that contributed to the death of the nature.
“Secretary of the Social Welfare Department has been asked to submit the earliest comprehensive report.
The Transgender Justice Council meeting will be held on July 23 to explore the option to reduce the problems faced by transgender in general,” said a statement from the minister’s office.
Bindu said the protocol would be ready to ensure that SRS was done scientifically, flawlessly.
“The government will explore the possibility of establishing trans-clinics to overcome the mental and physical problems faced by the community and the steps will be taken to end transgender exploitation by several institutions,” he said.
