Bareilly: The day after the Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide protection to the witnesses of the violence of Lakhimpur Kheri where eight people, including four farmers, were killed, the police had provided protection to 71 witnesses who had emerged to record their statements and families from the deceased.
While 23 witnesses came between October 8 and October 26, a total of 48 people appeared in just four days after the SC direction.
Twenty-six people recorded their statements on Friday under the 164 part of the CRPC before the Judge Judicial Court, said special prosecution was P Yadav.
“Overall 71 people have recorded their statements in the FIRS but most witnesses are related to the first FIR registered by farmers,” said Yadav.
A cross-FIR has also been put forward against the farmers by one of the defendants after violence broke out in Tikunia in 3.
