Nagpur: Atal Bahadur Singh, 79, a leading figure in the city government, academic, culture and sports circling, died on Friday afternoon after a prolonged disease.
The last rite will be carried out on Saturday.
Born on March 2, 1942 in Benara, Singh is a respected figure crossing many circles because of its friendly nature.
After becoming the Deputy Mayor in 1974, he had twice wore a mayor’s cap in 1977 and 1994.
Some high-ranking officials, who worked closely with him during his heyday, lamenting the death of the leader, who was also known as ‘Kingmaker’ at the Nagpur Municipal Corporation Circle.
After floating Lokmanch political parties, Singh did not succeed in opposing Lok Sabha’s polls on BJP tickets, but lost to the former Union Minister Vilas Muttemwar from Congress.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said Singh had never been jammed by the politics of religious caste-religion.
“I shared old relations with him.
No matter what crisis made this city, he was the first person to run, help and build.
As a socially sensitive and responsible person, Singh will always be remembered by the people.

Apart from political differences, he worked to unite people from all walks of life, “Gadkari said.
“He enriched the scenario of the art and culture of the city and was very passionate about development, getting rid of political differences.
As a student leader, Singh has taken part in the initiative to mention the various Nagpur University campuses after revolutionary freedom fighters,” recalled the opposition leader Devendra Fadnivis.
In addition to holding the position of President of the Nagpur District Football Association (NDFA), Singh is a member of the NU Executive Board, Senate and other bodies for a long time and is part of many important decisions.
A student from former Registrants of NU Balraj Aher, he has suggested giving Honerary Dlitt about Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar.
“With all three decades with NMC, Singh is known as a popular mayor because of its significant contribution to the construction of the city.
He is always at the forefront of sports, literature, and social work activities,” said Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari.
Considered as one of the main pillars of NMC so far with Prabhakarrao Dateke, Nana Shyamkule, Himmatrao Sarikar, Singh played an important role in starting Sheshrao Wankhede vidyaniketan for poor students and also initiatives to start several libraries during the mayor.
In 2014, he was honored by Shiv Chhatrapati for a lifetime of the achievement by the Maharashtra government.
“Atal Bhaiyya is an asset for the Western Indian Football Association (WIFA).
I happen to work with it for more than 30 years and we have organized many events in this region including Indian vs India soccer matches at Yashwant Stadium,” said President Ndfa Haresh Vora.
For Senior BJP Corporator Sandeep Joshi, Singh is a guiding light and he shares a close relationship with him.
“He is an inspiration and real guide about how to do social work, how back the player gathered,” Joshi said.
