BHUBANESWAR: The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Bhubaneswar, a deemed to be university, on Sunday celebrated its first convocation ceremony in virtual mode.
It has conferred honoris causa degrees of DLitt upon Odisha governor Ganeshi Lal and three eminent Odias.
The governor in his convocation address said it is a glorious moment and honour for Odisha when the state’s tribal boy and girl becomes the vice-captain of the national men’s and women’s hockey team for the Tokyo Olympics.
“There is no dearth of talents.
Right environment, encouragement and timely exposure is needed,” he added.

He advised the students to continue doing what they want to do and always try to be the best.
“Don’t compete with others, rather compete with yourself and you will be ahead of others.
Be what you want to be,” he added.
Besides the governor, the university conferred honoris causa degrees of DLitt upon three more noted Odias- Comptroller and Auditor General of India Girish Chandra Murmu, Parliament member for Kesses constituency in Kenya and founding chairman of Mediheal Group of Hospitals Kenya Swarup Ranjan Mishra and fashion designer and costume designer, New York, Bibhu Mohapatra.
The institution had started with only 125 students on board in 1992-93, but now it has around 30,000 students.
“Development of education is the development of the country,” KISS and KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta.
Among others, KISS chancellor Satya S Tripathi, pro-chancellor Upendra Tripathy, vice-chancellor Deepak Kumar Behera and other officials of the institution also spoke on the occasion.
Malho Mardi (2019 batch), School of Tribal Resource Management and Prashant Majhi (2020 batch), School of Indigenous Knowledge, Science and Technology, won Founder’s Gold Medal for securing highest CGPA in the whole university across all PG programmes.
