Kitchen Park at Government School in Dakshina Kannada Hit

Mangaluru: The Kitchen Gardens developed in government schools, and teach children how to grow their own food, have been influenced by a pandemic.
Vegetables planted are used to eat middle day.
Before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, most of the government schools in Dakshina Kannada cultivated local vegetables, and children used to participate in this activity.
However, with schools closed now, only a few schools managed to grow a small number of vegetables.
“We used to plant local brinjal varieties, cowpeas, finger ladies, green leafy vegetables and papaya.
With schools closed, we only plant sweet potatoes with the help of middle flour day and teaching staff,” said Devika, a teacher at the government elementary school higher, perlalabaiipady, in the taluk belthangady.
“Previously, we used to harvest about 5 kg of vegetables every day from the kitchen park, which was used to eat midday.

The school has 74 students.
Magdalene d’Souza, former Head of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, a high school, Bokkapatanna-3, said that only spinach and crafts have been cultivated in the school kitchen park this time.
“Previously, the results were exclusively used to prepare for midday eating, and every surplus was sold to the locals.
Kitchen parks are lessons for students outside their classrooms,” he told Stoi.
