Kolkata: Colleges and universities in Kolkata have found that around 25% to 30% of their new collection of their first year students – 17-on-18-year-old – not vaccinated, due to the state vaccine mandate.
Under circumstances, the authorities can adopt the policy of waiting and watching this group before allowing them to offline classes when the campuses opened back to the country on November 16.
Last week, the state government told that schools, most schools – mostly.
Those who have lived since March 2020 – will be reopened for classes on campus.
The reopening command does not put the limitations on the number of students permitted on the Higher Education Campus, also no guidelines say student vaccination status.
It has made college work and complicated university authorities.
Calling students who are not vaccinated to campus may expose them to viruses and, as a result, increase their chances of illness.
Cowin allows those born until December 2003 to register for vaccination, but the era of the minimum official vaccination is 18.
Right after the government announced the reopening, university authorities began collecting copies of student vaccination certificates, when they found almost 25%.
For 30% of new students are not aged 18 years and, thus, not vaccinated.
Most of them will be 18 years old in the next few months.
At St Xavier’s College, almost 80% of students have received both doses, while the rest have received at least the first dose and will be eligible for the second in the coming weeks.
“All of our teaching and non-teaching staff are fully vaccinated.
Close to 200 students who have just received an entrance ticket in the first year are not yet 18 years old, but they will qualify for vaccination in the next few months,” said Dominic Savio’s father, head school.
At Maulana Azad College, almost 150 students were not 18 years old.
“Near 40% of students have taken both doses, while 55% have received a dose,” said Subhasis Dutta, Principal.
In Lady Brabourne College too, there are new students who are not yet 18 years old.
“There are several students under the age of 18,” said Siuli Sarkar, Principal.
In universities such as Jaipuria, Goenka, Jadavpur University, and others, some students are under the age of 18.
“Nearly 30% of students who have received in the first semester of UG are not 18 years old.
They will spin 18 by the end of this year or early next year.
Now, government guidelines on reopening do not mention the student vaccination status.
We are confused about what is It must be done.
If we call students who are not vaccinated, it can pose a risk for them and others, “said the principal from a leading university in Kolkata.
“We haven’t prepared a final plan, but when we do it, the fact that some students are waiting for vaccination will definitely play a role.
Because they are in the first year, we can call them for classes on campus after a few weeks,” said the principal of a college in college North Kolkata.
Other principals said the meeting had been held with the management body, which was decided to “give priority to students who were in batches out, and needed to use a laboratory.
So, the first semester students may have to wait for a few weeks before they come to campus.” Experts say the risks to young people who are not vaccinated will be much lower than that to middle-aged or elderly.
“First, most have developed antibodies through Covid exposure, so they will be relatively safe even without vaccines.
Also, which is under 20 is more formidable and has fought better than others.
So, they tend to get a mild infection,” Rahul said Jain, Internal Medical Consultant, Belle Vue Clinic.
He, however, added that every student must hold on to the Covid protocol and use a mask in the class.
In some states where the campuses reopened in September, several private universities made mandatory vaccination but faced problems with students who were not 18 years old.
“We plan to compile roasters after diwali in college.
If there are no clear instructions from the government about vaccination status, we will make the elderly come to campus first.
In this way, students who are not vaccinated will be 18 years old and at least get Jab First they, “said the principal of another college.
