Kolkata: Local residents entered the hostel place of a student in a notch in New Town and attacked the monks who managed the facility after cooking hostels were found hanging in the first floor room on Friday.
The police, who suspected Rohit Halder had died of suicide, had sent his body for post-mortem.
The population in the area claimed Halder was forced to end his life after he was accused of theft by the authorities after one of the officials losing Rs 5,000 on January 23.
The police even found suicide notes from the room.
The police had a hard time managing an irritable crowd when they faced hostel officials and tried to drag some of them outside the building.
