Kolkata: The first month of the Monsun in Kolkata has been very wet this season with the city receiving 40% excess rain in June.
South Bengal has received rain of 44% more than usual for a month, which, according to meteorologists, is unusual because the rainy season usually goes to early June in Kolkata.
Since 2014, Kolkata has received more than normal rain on June – in 2018 when it recorded an excess of 51%.
The city received rain 332.6mm last month against normal 287.5mm.
The rainfall is heavier in South Bengal with a region that receives 368.6mm against normal 256.2mm.
Meterorologists showed that the short but intense rain coat between 18 and June 22 caused its advantages.
“There are simultaneous low pressure troughs and circulation of cyclones that trigger several heavy spells.
It encourages the rain count.
Similar spells in 2018 have caused excess rain in June that year,” said the Director of the Central Meteorology Center (RMC) GK DAS.
Often, rainfall remains a little in the city in June due to lack of the system.
“Monsun is driven by low pressure and circulation.
This time, we have several since the beginning.
Usually, very few system systems like that in June.
They are more common between July and early September, which is a decreased period in Kolkata and South Bengal, “Das added.
At the end of the third week of June, Kolkata experienced excess rain of 108%.
However, it was followed by a relatively dry week, where the city received sporadic drizzle.
“There is no strong system that can trigger heavy shower.
But short spells and drizzle can continue,” said the watershed.
