Kolkata: The Bengal State Election Commission has provided a nod to the state government proposal to hold elections to Kolkata and Municipal HOWRA companies on December 19.
Formal notifications for this effect will be immediately released, said the source.
The SEC has held a meeting with electoral and police officials in Kolkata and Howrat on November 12, the source added.
The election for 112 civil bodies in Bengal – including Howrah, Kolkata, and Salt Lake – are waiting since 2020.
These agencies are now run by the Council of Administrators appointed by the state.
The election cannot be held because of the ongoing pandemic.
Cases have been submitted in the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court about this.
After assembly by-polls, CM Mamata Banerjee has signaled city elections.
At first it was proposed for logistical reasons, the election for the Kolkata Agency, Howrah and Salt Lake will be held first, the rest later.
The SEC has agreed to the state proposal but indicates that it will hold elections to 144 KMC members and 66 HMC members first.
BJP Bengal has written to the State Election Commission which urges the notification of civilian polls at once when the state government wants to have it in the phase.
On Monday, Petitioner Mousumi Roy moved the election which urged the high court to all cities and city corporations a day.
