Kolkata: Among the worst patients in the past half a year because the pandemic, the restaurant industry not only now shows signs of turnover but is quite confident to compile an ambitious blueprint.
Some chains of iconic and popular city have launched new outlets recently or planned to do it in the coming months.
This list includes names like Peter Hu? From House of Peter Cat and Mocambo, Ms.
Bar and Lounge from Songhai and Manthan, 6 Ballygunge Place, Chowman, Oudh 1590 and Aminia.
Director of Peter Hu?, Siddharth Kothari, said that after almost five decades that the group had created a brand new.
Owned by his father Nitin Kothari, the group has two economical-ants Peter Paint and Mocambo.
“Peter Hu? Is our third brand.
We expanded for Mocambo in 2015 but this is a complete new business,” said Siddharth.
Brainchild of the Younger Kothari, who spent several years in Japan, the new 145-seater restaurant offers a variety of oriental cuisine.
“We were so far to the continent and India so this was our first trip to Pan-Asia which included China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
We started just two weeks ago and the response was very good,” he added.
The popular Songhai and Manthan restaurants have siblings after a decade, but in the form of a lounge bar.
Sudesh Poddar, the owner of the group and president of the hotel association and East Indian restaurant, has started MS Bar & Lounge at Waterloo Street which offers Indian and Chinese cuisine.
“The lounge bar is a new thing for us.
After being in the restaurant business for decades, we took the challenges and the response was amazing.
It starts about a month back and we have gotten a fixed customer,” said Poddar.
The owner of 6 places Biallygunge has taken over the Maharaja restaurant in Chowringhee and changed it.
“There is no authentic Bengali restaurant which is good in the Chowringhee area so we decided to take over the restaurant there and turn it into 6bp,” said Mitra S Raman’s Mandel.
Chowman Managing Director, Oudh and Chapter 2, Dedaditya Chowdhury, said he had expanded all brands even during a pandemic.
“We took over a restaurant called Sanjha Chulha in Salt Lake and opened Chowman there.
In Gouribari, we opened another Chowman a few months back by taking over the place that was previously a CCD outlet.
We also opened Chapter 2 in Southern Avenue in the middle of a pandemic, “He said.
Director of Aminia, Kabir Azhar, said the group had a plan to add two-three new outlets in the first three months of 2022.
There were 4,000-5,000 bars and restaurants in the city and suburbs with a combined income of Rs 6,000-7,000 Crore every year.
Industrial bars and restaurants in Kolkata only suffered losses of Rs 4,000-4,500 crore since the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020.
It employs more than 80,000 people in larger kolkata areas.
