Kolkata: The road in Salt Lake is very dangerous, creating very risky conditions for motorists, especially motorists.
Toi found at least several places like Salt Lake where the road subsidence had triggered a collapse if there was heavy rainfall.
One such place was on the path beside the FD Block Park, on the other hand where Bidhannagar Pura Bhavan was.
The road succumbs with two holes in it already on it, creating a dangerous situation for pedestrians and motorists.
Another place located near Arunachal Bhavan on the second road where the surface relented.
The construction engineer said that this happened because of cracking and water leakage on the underground drainage line channel, which disposed of the ground.
“Drainage channels are getting waves or developing cracks because of age or other factors.
It disturbs the land and develops a vacuum below because large land particles create gaps by having more air space and produce roads to subside,” said the soil expert and the Anjan construction engineer Kumar Dutta.
The locals say that there are several places such as the intersection of Amul Island next to the Salt Lake Stadium which is always vulnerable to the cave-in because the land weakens under the road.
Civil authority is often a fence from some of the roads that are caves.
Toi see most of the roads at the intersection became uneven with the bitumen layer applied.
Drivers, especially motorists, often faced discomfort while moving on a battered stretch as a crater or hole appearing out of nowhere.
They say that they must constantly remain vigilant.
“It’s very dangerous and risky for people like those of us who are riding a bicycle to move on the streets like that, more after dark when it becomes more difficult to see these spots from a distance,” said Kawshik Dutta, a resident of Block BD.
Bidhannagar authorities Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that they would take corrective steps such as and when things like that happened to their notification.
“The descent of such land sometimes occurs because of the movement and displacement of uneven underground land.
The spots will be identified and the steps will be taken,” said the BMC road department official.
BMC officials make a list of places in Salt Lake, where road conditions have deteriorated in several months in their improvement.
They will discuss this issue with agencies involved in repair work and ask them to treat maintenance for three years.
Failure which action will be taken against them.
