Kolkata: The city witnessed a 54% increase in suicide during the Covid-hit 2020, with a total increased from 181 in 2019 to 278 years ago.
It accounts for one of the highest leaps in suicide witnessed in a year, and the trend is reflected in several 53 cities considered for surveys.
Data, which was disclosed in the NCRB report and the latest traffic report for 2020 was released on Thursday, indicating a 200% suicide increase in Srinagar, 65% in Ranchi and 50% in Lucknow.
But the entire city suicide rate is only 2, the number calculated as the number of suicides per 1 Lakh population, states the NCRB report, which is considered an authentic indicator.
This is almost not part of the national average of 14.8 and a small portion of the national average of 11.3.
Kolkata suicide level is the second lowest in this country, behind Srinagar (0.5).
The city suicide rate is also much lower than in almost all other Metro.

June last year was one of the worst months.
On June 9, four people, including a 10-year-old child, in the city died of suicide.
Three of them consumed poisons, while the child hung himself.
A few days later, on June 14, five suicides were reported by Kolkata police.
The victims were 38 years old, two senior citizens, and two middle-aged people.
The fifth hangs himself.
It was the same day Actor Bollywood Sushant Singh Rajput had hung himself.
The same week, on June 17, seven suicides were reported cross-kolkata.

In the first week of July, three people died of suicide, including police police who shot themselves.
