Kolkata: The city witnessed a 54% increase in suicide during the Covid-hit 2020, with a total increased from 181 in 2019 to 278 years ago.
It accounts for one of the highest leaps in suicide witnessed in a year, and the trend is reflected in several 53 cities considered for surveys.
Data, which was disclosed in the NCRB report and the latest traffic report for 2020 was released on Thursday, indicating a 200% suicide increase in Srinagar, 65% in Ranchi and 50% in Lucknow.
But the entire city suicide rate is only 2, the number calculated as the number of suicides per 1 Lakh population, states the NCRB report, which is considered an authentic indicator.
This is almost not part of the national average of 14.8 and a small portion of the national average of 11.3.
Kolkata suicide level is the second lowest in this country, behind Srinagar (0.5).
The city suicide rate is also much lower than in almost all other Metro.
Even in Bengal, it was asansol-329 people there died by suicide in 2020 – who reported the maximum number of suicides in the first year of pandemic and not kolkata.
Compared to 278 cases in Kolkata, Delhi reported 3,025 suicide, registering a leap of nearly 25% from 2019.
Chennai reported 2,430 suicidal in 2020 and Bangalore 2,196.
Almost all cities in India witnessed an increase in suicide in pandemic, important exceptions were Dhanbad and Agra.
This study shows not one suicide in Kolkata is caused by bankruptcy or unemployment.
On the contrary, 197 cases were associated with mental illness and three to physical illness.
Given the contents of suicide notes, marriage problems, dowry demands and extra-marriage affairs are reasons for 43 cases.
Narcotics abuse and failure in the exam are also quoted among several reasons that cause drastic steps.
June last year was one of the worst months.
On June 9, four people, including a 10-year-old child, in the city died of suicide.
Three of them consumed poisons, while the child hung himself.
A few days later, on June 14, five suicides were reported by Kolkata police.
The victims were 38 years old, two senior citizens, and two middle-aged people.
The fifth hangs himself.
It was the same day Actor Bollywood Sushant Singh Rajput had hung himself.
The same week, on June 17, seven suicides were reported cross-kolkata.
The victims including 10-year-old children, two children aged 19 years and 30 years old.
In the first week of July, three people died of suicide, including police police who shot themselves.
While biological, psychological and sociological reasons are responsible for mental vulnerability, people in India are mistakenly conditioned to believe that they should not acknowledge their fragility, feel the counselor.
“This encourages many people to commit suicide without a clear warning,” said the psychological counselor Soumya Mukherjee.
There was never a single reason behind suicide, the psychiatrist J RAM said.
“Depression is a complex interaction of many factors.
So, there are always a number of reasons that generally join to encourage someone to commit suicide.
Many, especially those who are susceptible to depression, feeling isolated during a pandemic,” said RAM.
He added that many depression suffering often refused help, believing it was not a masculine.
