Kolkata: SSKM Set to Start ID Dept in Sambhunath Pandit

Kolkata: Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) can immediately produce a specialist of infectious diseases (ID).
To set up a prestigious Bengal Bengal Multispection Hospital, known as the SSKM, has created an ID Department in the Annexe Sambhunath Pandit Hospital unit (SNPH).
Two ID specialists were posted.
“For the first time, IPGMER has created an ID department.
This is the first step to run an academic course in this specialization.
We aim to run a 60 bed ward that will take care of all types of infectious diseases and start DM courses in ID,” said Director of Ipgmer Manimoy Banerjee.
This course is a three-year post-doctoral program in infectious diseases.
Pandemic Covid-19 has gave rise to scarcity of infectious diseases throughout the country.
Previously the Kolkata tropical medical school had submitted a re-appointment of this curriculum.
While the national medical council has examined the facility at STM, the medical institute has not received a nod.
IPGMER will aim to make four DM seats to start.
Become the busiest multispecialty hospital in the state, IPGMER gets patients who suffer from a spectrum of disease and have transplant facilities.
Health experts say IPGMER will provide a learning foundation for doctors who will be trained in infectious diseases.
Currently India only has several Institutes – AIIMS New Delhi and Vellore Medical College Vellore – which produces ID specialists.
Two specialists ID – Yogiraj Ray and Ayan Basu – have detailed at IPGMER.
Both doctors have begun to keep Covid-ICU in SNPH along with other cases of infectious diseases.
“The two DMs in infectious diseases have joined us.
We have sent our proposal to Creation Post.
After that approved by the Department, including finance, we can call for more faculty members,” said the Director of IPGMER.
Apart from Ray, Basu there are at least three other AIIMS specialists who are currently working in Kolkata which includes Sayantan Banerjee which is attached to the Buyaghata Hospital ID, Soumyadip Chatterji and Sayan Chakraborty both inherent with two different private hospitals.
“IPGMER will be an institute who will provide good exposure to students about all perspectives of infectious diseases,” Ray said which was the assistant professor.
The source at IPGEM shows that the Institute may require two more faculty members to run departments and teach students.
Apart from these five, the source said that some of the AIIM provided specialists from Bengal to work in other countries.
As long as the state government pandemic states the need to raise more specialists and expand maintenance facilities to other hospitals as well.
