Kolkata: The police have begun slapped the enhanced fine on all traffic violations from Friday.
Conservative estimates show city police will collect RS 14.6 lakh on one day through a fine if the current prosecution level continues.
As long as there is a case of compounding (where the perpetrators have / have the previous case of it for such violations), the fine collected per day will be higher.
Seeing Thursday’s number is an indicator.
Under section 122 of the Act MV (stop and illegal parking), where there are 1,335 prosecutions, a fine ranges between Rs 500-Rs 1,500.
Under section 128 (triple riding) and 129 (no helmet) where the minimum fine is Rs 1,000, each there are 95 and 163 prosecutions.
Under MV ACT 183 (overspeeding), where the enhanced fine ranges from Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000, 91 other prosecutions.
Under MV 184 (dangerous driving), where the steep fines range from Rs 5,000 and 10,000 Rs, 60 cases slapped.
With Lalbazar asked all sergeants to concentrate more on violations that lead to accidents – such as drinking driving, not wearing a helmet, a signal violation and talking via telephone – the police said the daily collection could be higher.
“On a normal day, Kolkata recorded more than 3,000 violations,” said a sergeant.
Lalbazar reaffirmed that it was not trying to boost traffic violations.
“We tried to ensure that this prosecution was reflected on the road.
If not, there’s no point in collecting a fine,” said a senior police officer.
