KOLKATA: Large regions of the town went under water Thursday after bouts of heavy downpour since morning.
The problem worsened between 2pm and 4pm every time a high tide at the Hooghly that overrun numerous north, south and central Kolkata regions.
KMC officials believe there’s more distress in store as yet another high tide is likely on Friday.
Residents of Kalighat, Chetla and Bhowanipore endured the worst for its 2nd successive day because heavy rain and potable water in Tolly’s Nullah bombarded these regions afresh.
Tidal water entered the homes over Kalighat Road, Rakhal Das Auddy Road (Chetla), Harish Chatterjee Street along with also the Lock Gate slum (Chetla).
Santosh Mandal, a resident of Rakhal Das Auddy Road, stated he had been made to go to a refuge as well as other relatives as underground water had flooded his own rooms.
“Now, I had been planning to return home.
But significant spells of rain along with the large tide made the problem worse.
I really don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Mandal said.
Apart from expressing concern over many neighbourhoods across Tolly’s Nullah, a part of civic engineers had been both concerned about a few north west and central Kolkata regions such as Rabindra Sarani (Chitpore), Bagbazar, Kumartuli, Burrabazar, BBD Bag and Strand Road.
As per a KMC sewerage and drainage branch officer, it might require much time to its storm water to float from such regions as most of lock gates across the Hooghly stayed closed from 11.

Large regions of Behala, Mominpur, Kidderpore, Metiabruz, Garden Reach, Alipore, Ballygunge and portions of Tollygunge captured heavy rain because Thursday morning.
From 2pm, south Kolkata regions had received more rain than localities from the northwest.
However, since the afternoon progressed, places such as Maniktala, Belgachhia and Thanthania travelled below water.
A part of Kolkata Police deputy commissioners was requested to care for the rescue of inhabitants residing in low-lying locations.
In the 74 lands in north and south Port places, the authorities also have taken up the main job of supplying food.
A KMC sewerage and drainage division said that they had been worried over a second high tide that’s expected on Friday evening.
“When it rains , the wave can pile more misery on these remaining together Tolly’s Nullah to its next successive day,” the civic said.
