Kolkata: In an effort to combat the increase in diesel costs and reduce pollution, Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) on Monday introducing a CNG-fueled bus in Kolkata, an official said.
Firhad Transportation Minister inaugurated the vehicle as first.
The WBTC already has a fairly large fleet around 100 electric buses which are ply in and around the city.
The minister himself drove the first CNG bus Kolkata at Kasba Depot WBTC to formally launch services.
“Kolkata will now have a CNG vehicle.
In the future, the bus will mostly electricity and CNG.
This will reduce costs and reduce pollution,” said the judge.
The buses are being installed with CNG, said an official, adding that this can and this can run with a diesel engine if necessary.
BGCL, Joint venture Gail (India) Ltd and Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Ltd, signed an agreement with the WBTC for CNG supply to its depot.
According to officials, this step will save fuel costs as far as 25 to 30 percent.
