K’taka: Edu department to beef up internal assessment

BENGALURU: After the Karnataka government scrambled to find ways to assess students after it became impossible to conduct SSLC and II PU exams because of the pandemic, the primary and secondary education department has decided to strengthen the internal assessment system for the coming year.
It is working on modalities to identify assessment indicators and finalise the number of internal assessments required for the next year.
Currently, there are four formative assessments and two summative assessments.
“Every lesson has a learning outcome and we need certain parameters to test that.
We are framing the assessment indicators.
We’re consulting teachers and experts, and discussing the number of internal assessments required,” said an official.
Dept of PU to make system more robustThe government said it had to crunch SSLC exams into a two-paper format because there was no tangible model to otherwise assess the students.
While CBSE and CISCE, among others, cancelled the exams, they relied on their strong internal assessment system to assess students.
Karnataka follows the continuous and comprehensive evaluation pattern, but it has not been robust.
Educationists have been calling for a similar reform to increase the weightage for continuous evaluation instead of relying only on the final exam.
The department of PU education said it, too, will make the system more robust for the next year.
“We’re waiting to complete the modalities for this year’s result.
Students will have to be serious about the internal assessments too.
If a similar situation emerges next year, we will have to rely on these marks like other boards,” said Snehal R, director.
She said II PU results will be announced by June end and added that they would probably ask PU colleges to provide class 10 marks of students as well.
Officials at Karnataka State Secondary Education Examination Board, which conducts SSLC exams, said the schedule will depend on the Covid situation.
