Kochi: Lakshadweep Administration has changed the weekly outside the day for schools in the Union region from Friday to Sunday, triggering protests in the Islands dominated by Muslims.
Muslims are nearly 96% of Lakshadweep populations such as the 2011 and Friday census have become holidays in schools there for decades.
The command issued by the Ministry of Education Providing UT, December 17, said school timings and regular activities “suggested” to be modified to be “ensuring the utilization of optimal resources and the involvement of the learning-learning processes and the required learning process”.
It also includes detailed classes for English and Malayalam secondary schools for the 2021-22 academic year, which all Friday will work.

“The decision was taken without discussion with Panchayat District, elected representatives or PTA.
This is an unilateral and unpopular decision; Lakshadweep people will not accept it,” he said.
Faizal said the new timing would also collide with the Madrassa system on the islands on Friday morning.
