Coimbatore: Mettupalayam Municipality on Friday takes around one hectare of encroachment soil intended as an open space reserve for public use.
Land on Jalan Sirumugai is valued at around Rs 5 Crore.
It is used by an individual to run the iron shop.
During the approval process, land is displayed as open space reserves and the city directorate and state planning has approved the plan.
However, the promoter did not surrender land to the local body and rented it to commercial activities.
Officials said that the land was allocated for children’s parks and other general necessities of residents in the region.
Officials from various departments, including technical wings, the Department of Health and City Planning, took land with the help of local police.
The eviction was required because the shrimp refused to empty the land even though there were two notifications from the municipality.
After encroachment is removed, the fence is placed around the ground to ensure that it is not occupied in the future.
