Nagapattinam: Twenty-one fishermen from Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Karikan and Cuddalore on two trawlers were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy on charges of illegal hunting in their waters on Monday night.
Meanwhile, condemning the arrest, Minister M K Stalin had written to the Minister of External Affairs J Jaishankar who asked him to secure the direct release of fishermen and their boats also resolved the old problem with Sri Lanka in this matter.
According to the coastal security group from Nagapattinam, 12 fishermen who came from Nagapattinam were fishing in the southeast coast of the district on January 31 when they were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy and taken to the Kangesanthurai naval base.
Meanwhile, a group of other fishermen consisting of nine members from Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and the cuddal of Puduchers who traveled to the sea on board were also arrested by Navy Sri Lanka, while they were involved in fishing around the area, officials said.
Sri Lankan Navy also took two puppets of fishing.
