LONDON: The Laureus Sports World Awards will be held almost for the second year in a row in April due to “limitations and uncertainty” caused by Covid-19 Pandemics.
2022 Awards will build the success of Laureus’ 2021 ‘Virtual Choice’, the organizers said in a statement on Wednesday.
This event will continue to celebrate the achievement of athletes and inspirational stories from the world of sports, which last year including the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics and Euro 2020, among others.
The nominees were chosen by a 1300 panel of sports journalists scheduled to be announced on February 2, after which the winner of the most prestigious awards in sports will be decided through voting by 71 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
Laureus Academy formed an ultimate sports jury, consisting of many of the largest Olympic gold medalists, world champions and most excellent performances in sports.
Sean Fitzpatrick, Chair of the Laureus World Sports Academy, said: “We know for sure, after an amazing and challenging year for sports, which 2022 will be awards to remember The Academy will certainly have a difficult job of choosing winners from so many outstanding sportsmen, sportsawati and team.” In addition to seven categories of nomination – sportsman, sportsawati, team, breakthrough, comeback, disability and action sports, Laureus will recognize the efforts of community-based programs through its ‘Sport for Good Award’.
Laureus Academy will also choose a special Choice winner that includes Lifetime Achievement, Sports Sports and Athlete Advocacy.
Last year’s winner including Rafael Nadal (Sportsman), Naomi Osaka (Sportswati), Bayern Munich (TIM), Patrick Mahomes (breakthrough) and Max Parrot (comeback) and Billie Jean King (Lifetime) and Lewis Hamilton (for Laureus Prime Athletes Advocate Award ).
