Gurgaon: The two-year-old Leopard died after being hit by a vehicle at Pali Road, near Asola Bhati Wildlife Sanctuary, in Faridabad on Monday morning.
This area was vulnerable to such an accident and the nine-year-old Leopard was killed in the same way in October last year with the same stretch.
In the past 14 years, 10 leopards have died in accidents on the road inside and around this area.
Wildlife officials, who received information about leopards around 9am, took the carcass and registered the case.
The post-mortem report is awaited.
“The autopsy will be carried out in Faridabad and the definite reason for death will be determined after that.
According to the preliminary examination, it seems like Leopard died of a brain injury after being hit by a vehicle,” said Wildlife Inspector District Rajesh Chahal.
Chahal added that they had sent proposals to build wildlife and underpass corridors in the area.
Residents said they had also demanded a corridor for a long time but nothing happened.
“Pali Road has witnessed several leopard deaths.
It passed the middle of the Aravalis and divided the two corridors used by wildlife to cross the Asola Bhati wildlife asylum in Delhi, through Gurgaon (Mangar-bandhwari), to Sariska in Rajasthan.
We have demanded Underpasses in this area for a long time but still delayed, “said Jitender Bhadana, a resident of Faridabad and an environmental activist.
In the 2017 report, the Wildlife Institute of India (Wii) has shown that the belt is a rich leopard habitat.
After that, the Ministry of Wildlife has installed signaging on the road and accelerates the obstacles to curb accidents.
However, environmentalists show that the Department of Wildlife has not worked on the proposed underpass.
“This road has seen so many wildlife deaths in the past decade.
Why is this area not announced by the wildlife corridor?” Vivek Cambodi said, a member of Haryali NGO.
Other activists say the “inefficiency” of the Department of Wildlife is reflected in many deaths on the highway.
“While signs of wildlife are installed, the department plan on wildlife mitigation for infra-projects is delayed,” said Environmental Activist Vaishali Rana Chandra.
This area is famous for the death of leopards on the highway.
On October 20, 2019, a 1-month-old girl’s leopard was destroyed to death on the same road in the Pali area.
In January of that year, other women’s leopards were killed in an accident in Faridabad.
In May 2015, a young woman’s leopard had died after being hit by a vehicle in Gurgaon-Faridabad Road near Manggar Bani.
In November 2014, 12-year-old male leopard was killed in an accident in Manesar.
In April 2014, four leopards were found dead in a week in and around a private golf resort in Gurgaon.
In February 2009, a leopard and two children were injured by a vehicle at NH-8.
In September 2008, a vehicle that quickly killed a three-year-old male leopard on the highway near the village of Manesar.
