New York: Leylah Fernandez may be short in the final U.S.
Open Final on Saturday, but Canadian’s teenager wins over the New York crowd after the match when he gave respect for the resilience of the city at the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
Fernandez, a 19-year-old, spoke in the courts after his impossible trajectory, seemed to be done by post-match interview until he asked the microphone back so he could overcome the crowd in Arthur Ashe stadium in Queens.

“I know today is very difficult for New York and everyone around the United States,” said Fernandez, who fell 6-4 6-3 for British teenagers Emma Raducanu.
“I just want to say that I hope I can be as strong and tough because New York has become the last 20 years.” Fernandez, who wasn’t even born when an attack on the World Trade Center Tower took place, said he had learned about 9/11 from watching a movie and asked his parents what happened.

“Obviously I don’t know much about what really happened,” said Fernandez.
“But with a little information I have, I know that New York has suffered the last few years when it happened.” I just want to tell them that they are so strong, they are very tough.
“They are just extraordinary.” Just having them here happily, live, just returning to their path, having my back during these difficult moments, has made me stronger.
