Greater Noida: The police on Tuesday claimed to have captured smugglers of liquor and grabbed more than 1,000 bottles of liquor worth almost Rs 5.4 lakh in the Riefa Noida area.
The defendant, Upendra Singh (40), a resident of Aligarh, who was used to smuggle liquor on a luxury bus from Haryana to Bihar, police said.
Acting on the tip-off, the police team stopped the luxury bus to check the East Peripheral Toll Road near Naurangpur Village around 5am on Tuesday.
“There are only two people – drivers and maids – on the boat.
The whole search helped us win 1,080 bottle of Haryana liquor from the bus,” said Brij Nandan Rai, Assistant Commissioner of Police (3) Greater Noida (3).
“They don’t have valid letters to transport liquor.
While upendra, who drove a bus, arrested, helper, was identified as Raju (30), managed to escape,” he said.
During interrogation, upendra told the police that he went to Bihar to sell illegal liquor with a rate hike at that time was forbidden there.
“He was produced in court and sent to Hakimu prisoner,” Rai said.
