Nagpur: City solid waste management is a big challenge for this country, the main reason is operational costs higher than the income obtained, because the selection of incorrect waste management technology.
It was highlighted by Harish Hirani, director of the Institute of Central Engineering Engineering Research (Cmeri), Durgapur, which is a Mechanical Engineering Research Institute and the Constituent Laboratory of the Indian Scientific Research Council and Industry (CSIR).
Hirani spoke in a webinar on ‘CSIR-CMERI’s solid waste technology’ for city corporations and other administrative and industrial agencies.
The meeting was held by the Ministry of Micro Small and Medium – Development Institute, Nagpur, in connection with the College of Engineering and Technology HVPM, Amravati.
Said that the management of unpropriate city solid waste is responsible for the pollution of surface and underground water, said Hirani, “the main component of city-dense waste is waste bio-degradable, which is in the range of 60-80%.

“Cmeri has developed a decentralized solid waste management technology (DSWMT) consisting of a number of modules, which tries and provides solutions for management of every aspect of solid waste , “CMERI’s pilot factory offers module-wise technology to dispose of individual waste components, which can help the user division obtain a sustainable model,” officials said.
Inaugurated in November 2017, this technology was being held at the Crpf Group Center, Durgapur, Senapati, Imphal East, Imphal West, Manipur District Bishupur, and Plastic Aglomeration Modules in all 16 Manipur districts.
“Efforts are also ongoing for the installation of factories of 5 tons per day for fruit and vegetable waste, which will be sponsored by Punjab Bathing Board, Mohali,” the official said.
DSWMT consists of eight modules, including mechanical segregation, bio-methylation, composting, briquettes, pyrolysis, plastic agglomeration, plasma gasification, and a group of bricks and aggregates.
