Nainital: Local residents and environmental lovers have intensified their protest against “rebuilding” proposed from Sultal – interconnected groups of seven lakes located a few kilometers from Nainital – with many opposing “ecological paradise concretisations”.
Sattal rebuilding plan involves building a child park, point of view, besides beautiful work and landscape.
But local residents say construction in a fragile area will damage rich biodiversity.
Last week, as a job on a project that officially began, residents initiated a Twitter storm with earthmover photos next to the pure waters of Sattal Lake.
E-petition to declare a “conservation reserve” satal also has collected 32,000 signs while the website has been set to ‘save satals’.
The region is famous as a bird watching place and is one of the few breeding places for endangered mahseers.
This is also one of the last OAK forests in Uttarakhand.
“This area has a high number of leopards, birds, reptiles, fish along with significant vegetative diversification.
Concreteization will destroy everything,” said Asheesh Bishhan, an assistant professor at Kumaun University.
Aagnay Budhraj, a sattal resident who started an online petition, alleged that people were not consulted by the government.
“We don’t want a permanent structure in this field.
Administration needs to find a solution.” He said.
