New Delhi: The maximum poll expenditure limit for candidates has been carried out until Rs 95 Lakh from Rs 70 Lakh for the selection of Lok Sabha and Rs 40 Lakh from RS 28 Lakh for the election of the Assembly, according to the decision taken by the Ministry of Law on the Recommendation for the Election Commission.
The new expenditure limit for assembly polls, revised given the increase in the cost and voter size inflation index between the last major revisions in 2014 and 2021, will apply to the upcoming elections, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, the possibility of being announced every day now.
An EC high-ranking official said the new expenditure limit, the last revised about seven years ago, will help candidates meet higher costs in digital campaigns and mass media considering the sidewalks are more stringent because of Covid and additional spent for covid safety materials such as sanitisers and Mask.

For the selection of assembly, the revised poll expenditure limit for candidates will now be Rs 40 Lakh for major countries, up 42% from RS 28 Lakh, while candidates in small countries can now spend the maximum RS 28 lakh, 40% more Height from the previous limit of Rs 20 Lakh.
The EC has established a committee in 2020 to review expenditure limits at a view of 12.23% in the cost inflation index of 240 in 2014-15 to 317 in 2021-22 and 32% increase the number of voters from 834 million in 2014 to 936 million in the year 2021.
Committee – consisting of retired IRS officers Harish Kumar, EC Secretary General of Umesh Sinha and Deputy Deputy for Chief Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Kumar – heard political parties and electoral observers before making their recommendations received by EC.
