Panaji: CM Pramod Sawant said on Saturday that unprecedented floods in Goa on Thursday and Friday may have cost more than Rs 500 Crore – more than tripled suffered by the state after destruction was carried out by the Tauktae cyclone in the month May.
Stating that this was the initial estimate of losses, Sawant said he would receive a detailed report on damage and losses on Tuesday.
CM said that around 5,000 houses have been damaged in the flood.
Some fields and roads are kept submerged in several parts of the country, including Amona “after the final report is compiled, the same thing will be forwarded to the financial assistance center,” Sawant said.
“Our government will compensate for damage within 15 days.” He added that all senior bureaucrats have been spent to visit flood-affected areas and assess damage.
As reported by TOI on Saturday, Sawant said that four lives were lost on Friday due to floods – a woman, and three men who were electrocuted.
Floods are affected mainly rural Goa, and are very severe in Talukas Sattari, Bicholim and Ponda, in addition to Bardez, Pernem and Dharbandora.
The houses were broken, some collapsed, at least two small bridges washed away, and the road was submerged.
The bridge above Mhadei which connects the village of Paikul and Dhada collapsed due to rain and floods, CM has said that the foot gardens have been supplied to those affected by flooding.
“Bureaucrats have been asked to put everything in a place in the affected areas of the flood.
Although the main structure of several houses has not been affected, internal damage is very severe because water and mud have entered houses.
In most cases, minimum losses can be more than RS 1 lakh per home, because electronics, clothing and other equipment have been damaged, “Sawant said.
CM added that he called the minister of the house of Union Amit Shah, who promised to provide all the help needed to the state.
Meanwhile, the train track along the route of the South West train has been restored for the train.
Temporary speed restrictions 10 kmps have been enforced.
Sawant said that on Saturday morning, he visited Daukond Village which was affected by the flood in Dharbandora Taluka, which was almost under water for about 8 hours.
“We have directed representatives collectors to provide the main assistance to people in trouble,” Sawant said.
With a rain, life in the affected areas of the flood has begun to return to normal.
The water level on the river has also begun to fall.
Floods have nearly 832 hectares of agricultural areas severely damaged, and the introductory agriculture loss has been pegged at Rs 2.5 Crore.
