Chennai: Even when depression above Bay Bay has not crossed the coast, the Meteorology Department of India on Thursday said the new low-pressure area is likely to be formed above the South Andaman Sea on November 13.
IMD Tweeted, “New Low Pressure Area tends to form above the South Andaman Sea and the environment around November 13.
It is likely to move the west-northwest and become more marked for the next 48 hours.” Weather Blogger Pradeep John said there was a new system opportunity to move more high in latitude.
“Chennai might rain but not as we see now,” he said.
On Thursday afternoon, Deputy Director General of Meteorology S said Balachandran said Tamil Nadu and Puducherry had recorded 40cm rainfall in the northeast rainy season starting October 1 against normal 26cm, leaving excess rainfall of 54%.
Chennai has registered 74cm against normal 42cm carrying 77% rainfall during the same period.
“Depression has moved at 21kmph.
It will cross near Chennai tonight.
The surface wind in the coastal area of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet and Villupuram is likely to be at 40-45kmph when the system crosses the beach,” he said at a press meeting.
