Guwahati: A month after Dholpur’s eviction in Darrang Assam District, the Hojai District Government expelled around 550 of the total 670 families, which allegedly penetrated around 500 hectares of land in Lumding reserve forests, on the first day of the drive on Monday.
The government also submitted FIR to one Nazrul for allegedly helping the family settle in the forest.
Deputy Hojai Commissioner Anupam Choudhury told TI that the district government would expel 120 families left on Tuesday.
“We have evicted 550 families.
People have emptied their homes before the administration starts the eviction.
Some people have not left the place until now because of some problems.
They will also leave the place.
We will clean the rest.
We will clean the remaining land encroachment on Tuesday, “DC said.
He said people had extended 100% cooperation with the district administration in cleaning the area.
He said there was no effort to make an unward incident made by anyone during the eviction.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Minister Himanta Buswa Sarma said that cleaning the forest was the great success of the government after the eviction of Dholpur.
He said, “When asked, people said that a Nazrul had helped them settle in the forest.
We have filed FIR in this matter.
We know that Nazrul cannot do this without the help of departmental officials.
Everything will come out once the police choose so police Nazrul .
“The families who were evicted belonged to Garo, Chakma and the Muslim community lived in forest land that planted ginger and turmeric since 2011-12.
People used to produce turmeric worth around Rs 25 Crore per year.
The district government has not been arranged for any camp or ration for families evicted.
Some families have returned to their own land in other parts of the country while some have been shelter while in the nearest villages.
The district government on Sunday deployed around 1,000 police and CRPF personnel throughout the area to prevent efforts to create unwanted situations during eviction.
