Rajkot: Gando Baval or Prosopy Juliflora who are very slandered (PJ) – The invasive ‘alien’ weeds destroyed the traditional plots of traditional meadow at Kutch destroyed the livelihoods of the people – may have last laughter if a scientific paper can save its existence.
Over the years now, there has been a discussion to eradicate weeds to save Banni’s grasslands mostly under the request of the locals.
But, a paper recently published by the Guide (Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology), suggests making a separate management policy for PJ, because weeds have the capacity to produce employment lakh and can lead big changes throughout the Land Ecosystem of Banni Kutch.

This paper shows that PJ can be used in making bread, biscuits, syrup, coffee, cocktails and even brandy regardless of wood used in making charcoal and producing electricity.
It is said that the use of a variety of PJ is famous in various countries, even though it has produced very little awareness about its full potential.
Points published in the Global Journal of Science Frontier Research suggest better use with policy interventions to produce new industries and new jobs.
However, it states that this option is very expensive and practical it is not possible to see the experience of other countries.
Speaking with Toi, one of the authors of this paper and guide director, V Vijay Kumar said, “We need to do a separate management policy for PJ.
We consider it an alien species but has economic and environmental potential.
We must make a new management plan for PJ considering Positive and negative points.
“Furthermore Kumar said that proper planning can help produce massive employment opportunities and lead economic development to dry land.

Pods can be useful for making a mixture of animal feed, edible biscuits, energy tonics for parents and children, coffee, brandy, prosopis gum, but the products are not popular in India and for the spread of awareness it is needed.
In 2009, the guide published a research paper called “Prosposis: Ecological, economic significance and management management” where they mention the potential ability of Gando Baval.
According to paper, this is an invasive alien species that spread rapidly – the only negative point of plant species – but if this can be controlled, mankind can reap great benefits from it.
It seems proven to be an important source of domestic fuel in rural households in the last century.
The wood burns evenly and does not trigger or smoke excessively and the value of heat wood is high enough.
Another use of Gando Baval Wood is for a generation of charcoal and electricity.
The biomass produced from IT is used in electricity generation and can produce MW electricity from 6,169 tons of fuel wood.
The cost of power generation from PJ is also very cheap.
